New Jersey Young Dems endorse the NJ Democracy Act!

The New Jersey Democracy Act, most recently passed by the Senate at the end of June, would expand current voting measures in New Jersey to allow for greater access to the right to vote. Along with many organizations such as ACLU-NJ and New Jersey Working Families, New Jersey Young Democrats are officially in full support of this vital piece of legislation.

If passed, the NJ Democracy Act would offer automatic voter registration at Motor Vehicle Commission offices, online voter registration, and early voting opportunities. Now more than ever, increased accessibility to voting for citizens is needed: only 5 percent of Garden State voters turned out for the last cycle of primary elections, and New Jersey ranks among the 10 lowest-performing states in the U.S. for voter participation.

The very basis of Democracy is the right of citizens to actively participate in society, on both communal and political levels. While it seems than many of our state’s citizens have little hope in their ability to make meaningful, lasting impact in their home state, passing the New Jersey Democracy Act will serve as a strong step towards empowering New Jersey citizens to take action and fight for their beliefs and values.

The New Jersey Democracy Act is directly in line with the mission and goals of New Jersey Young Democrats, and for that reason, we strongly support its passing.
